DEE DRESLOUGH-STYLE DRAGON FAN-ART CONTEST/EXHIBITION

run by [Paul Doyle]

Hello, everybody! DEE DRESLOUGH should be rather familiar to most of you, as her distinctive drawing style pops up everywhere on SF/fantasy pages across the Internet. She is best known for her Dimarene Dragons, a distinctive style of "furry" dragon that actually only has fur during the colder months of the year.

www.dreslough.com

Anybody checking out Dee Dreslough's wonderful website will quickly find out that she is extremely generous with her artwork. She is about as approachable and down-to-earth as you're possibly going to get, considering her appeal and talent. She is also still somewhat "underground" (compared to Michael Whelan and Larry Elmore, for instance) . . . and she LOVES fan art work! What's not to love about her? We've traded e-mails, and although I'm not claiming to be her "number one fan", I did get her official endorsement for this contest. (I have the e-mails on file in case anybody has a question.) She looks forward to seeing what comes out of this contest, and so do I! Let's all hve fun, but first (duh duh dum dum duh) . . .

---the rules---

1. Up to 50 entries, one per person, scanned 100 KB or less out of consideration for those of us stuck with dial-up Internet service and cheap modems. (Case-by-case exceptions allowed here). Contest will end once 50 acceptable entries have been submitted, or eight weeks have passed, whichever comes first. In the event of increased demand, more than 50 entries will be accepted---provided satisfy the other requirements.

2.) Technical quality will not necessarily be the deciding factor, as most of us entering do not have the artistic skills to be commisioned book cover artists! Imagination, creativity, emotion, depth and distinctiveness will all be important factors. This is NOT an intimidating environment!

3.) The following will NOT be allowed: lined paper entries (if you have an otherwise good entry, there are ways to remove those lines without harming the art itself); traceovers/forgeries of Dee Dreslough artwork; and particularly ACTUAL Dee Dreslough artwork you say is your own! Lined paper entries will be given time to be modified (and then disqualified if not fixed by a certain time); all other rulebreaking entries will be removed and disqualified without further argument. I will alert Dee Dreslough and the Guards if someone claims her artwork is theirs!

4.) Any and all media forms are acceptable, providing they are 100 KB scans or smaller. You, the entrant, may either have your Dimar dragon characters; or, (even better!) your own style of dragon interacting with a Dimar dragon. (For Example: Your Chinese-style dragon fast asleep on a beach, using a snoozing Dimar dragon's shoulder as a pillow.) Have fun, and let your imagination soar! Preference will be given to mixed-subspecies art. But there must be at least one clearly visible Dee Dreslough-style dragon in your artwork.

5.) VERY IMPORTANT : The artists will allow [Paul Doyle] to send one copy of every entry, free of charge, to Dee Dreslough at www.dreslough.com . This is her dragon art style we are celebrating, after all, and she very much enjoys guest artwork. If you have a problem with this, sorry! Start your own contest.

6.) VOTING:

(VERY IMPORTANT)

. No contest entrant may solicit votes on their Elftown page(s), or their entries will be disqualified. Only the runner of this contest, [Paul Doyle], can do this (to publicize the contest itself on Elftown/Elfwood), but in the spirit of fairness [Paul Doyle]'s entry will not be eligible to be voted upon. My reasoning is because many Elftown art contests have been ruined by solicitation of votes, resulting in a questionable ten-minute entry winning by a landslide over art that clearly took hours of hard work and undivided attention. In the event of unresolved, questionable voting practices (very unlikely) [Paul Doyle] reserves the right to select the winner himself, possibly with the assistance of Dee Dreslough herself. Again, [Paul Doyle]'s entry will not be eligible for votes.

7.) [Paul Doyle] may change the terms of this contest at any time, and Dee Dreslough has the right to Cease and Desist this contest at any time (not that she would, but that's just a little pseudo-legalese jargon I threw in just for the heck of it.)

NEW RULE! November 14, 2003--- Contestants may advertise the contest (but not solicit votes) on their page. Please, go ahead. The more the merrier.

ANOTHER NEW RULE! November 15, 2003--- You may post in-progress works, but please finish them before contest deadline

DON'T LOOK NOW FOLKS, BUT HERE COMES YET ANOTHER RULE CHANGE! November 22, 2003--- Until we get a LOT more artists submitting entries, go ahead and put up multiple entries. If this contest catches on in a major way, all entrants will choose which entry to keep back, and we will revert back to th original rule.

HAVE FUN!

DEADLINES: This contest will begin Monday, November 17 and end

APRIL 15th, 2004.

(Please leave spaces between your entries, along with your name. If you leave a title or comment, the happier we'll all be.

:-) Have fun!

(1.)<img:http://elftown.heddate.com/img/drawing/teptep1069545348.jpg> [teptep]  this is almost finished I think maybe very very few minor changes need to be done to it. this was the first one that was up edited to spiffyness. (on a side note I got alittle help with the detail)

(2.)<img:http://elftown.heddate.com/img/drawing/teptep1069388932.jpg> [teptep]  In progress

3. [Nere]- yep, this is my attempt :P Darsinth isn't too impressed with the dimars' attention :P
<img:http://elftown.heddate.com/img/drawing/Nere1069740836.jpg>

(4.)[blackphoenix] almost finished
<img:http://elftown.heddate.com/img/photo/blackphoenix1069775630.jpg>

(5.)
. ( i think ) [Dragon Hawk]
Here's mine ^_^
I have never actually seen Dee's work before today, but i think it is cute, so here is my fan peice.

(6.)
<img:http://elftown.heddate.com/img/drawing/1487_1073267008.jpg> ...I call him Phantom...

(7.)* [Kamona] is very confused on the entree counting*
<img:http://elftown.heddate.com/img/photo/Kamona1068947212.jpg>

(8.) Two Worlds [liiga] - um sorry this turned out very wide and resizing slaughtered the detail. It's at full size and detail at http://www.angelfire.com/art2/bilzhuki/dimarenepic.html - 291Kb.

<img:stuff/twoworlds_ET.jpg>

(9.)"Bathing for a Change" by [Nulltorque]. This is not nearly as crisp and detailed as the original, and I have nowhere to host a full size, so I am afriad you will have to deal with this blurry one for the time being. It's a Dimar dragon in the midst of a genetic change in case it was unclear. :)
<img:http://elftown.heddate.com/img/drawing/Nulltorque1069483309.jpg>

10.) [Pnelma Tirian] untill I pretty up my entree...(: And that is now!!
<img:http://elftown.heddate.com/img/drawing/Salek%252520FireStag1069392598.jpg>

(11.)
Please note this "entry" is not an actual entry! No voting on this one, please. art contests no longer allows contest owners to actually enter their own contests. Thankfully . . .
[Paul Doyle] Finished way, way after the fact . . . this pic was damaged by slush, salt and sand, and I didn't bother restoring/redoing the partially washed-away background. The much darker stuff is new . . .
<img:http://elftown.heddate.com/stuff/DresloughTribute.jpg>

(12.)Still not really happy with the nose, and I feel like I should have included a sheep -- ah well, this one's done, anyway 3:) [Sheepy]
<img:http://students.juniata.edu/donahrm0/temp/dimar2.jpg>

(13.)I just couldn't manage it in 20 pixels *sob* even in 40 it's impossible to make fur look furry. Doh!
<img:http://mindspring.com/~traeil/icons/dimar.gif>

Gotta love the hot pink hair. Now I want hot pink hair. [TamponLollipops]
(14.)<img:http://elftown.heddate.com/img/photo/Becca%252520Dragon1070251545.jpg>

2003-11-16 [liiga]: I've a q'n - in the rules it says "Preference will be given to mixed-subspecies art." Now what exactly is meant by 'mixed-subspecies'?

2003-11-16 [Paul Doyle]: [liiga] Mixed subspecies--- that would be like your Mod's Choice dragon (the gold one) sitting on a rock having a conversation with a Dreslough-style dragon. I'm planning a picture of Jak'edrac sel'Gury (my dragon character from the novels I'm writing, who is seen on [123scapegoat] and possibly his mate Jul'eweisa snoozing on a beach next to a pair of Dreslough dragons, perhaps having all the dragons using each other as pillows! That is what I meant---not hybrid offspring, although that would certainly be interesting . . .

2003-11-16 [liiga]: "Mixed subspecies--- that would be like your Mod's Choice dragon (the gold one) sitting on a rock having a conversation with a Dreslough-style dragon." Are you psychic? *poke poke* I sooooo had such a pic in mind. O.-

2003-11-16 [Paul Doyle]: I'm many things, [liiga] . . . but psychic? Not too sure about that one . . .

2003-11-16 [Nere]: one way to find out...*thinks of a number between one and ten*

2003-11-16 [Paul Doyle]: uh . . . seven?

2003-11-16 [Nere]: 0.0 ....my god you are psychic!!!!!!!!

2003-11-16 [Paul Doyle]: (I work at a casino in RL . . . seven is a VERY common "lucky" number)

2003-11-16 [Paul Doyle]: [Kamona] Wow! That's an awesome picture! Don't worry about the Entry Counting . . . haven't got a clue about that either. Speaking of that, I have to get to my entree . . . my after-work dinner . . . and I'll be back in a little while.

2003-11-16 [Kamona]: Thanks ^_^

2003-11-16 [Sirfy]: I don't stand a chance, lol

2003-11-17 [Paul Doyle]: neither do I (even I could have mine voted) . . . limited to pencils and erasers, I am . . . uh . . . artistically challenged

2003-11-17 [Sabaku no Gaara]: cool!!!

2003-11-18 [teptep]: I am a new fan of dee's I'm reading her book and to tell you the truth it is good, I havn't read any books lately scence the wheel of time, nothing seemed interesting enough to keep my atintion, this book is one of thoughs books that draws you in.

2003-11-18 [Paul Doyle]: I downloaded her e-book, but I've yet to read it (I'm writing my own novel! LOL). BTW [teptep], this is off the subject, but if you're looking for slam-bang SF, you ought to read "Startide Rising" by David Brin . . . just totally awesome . . . kind of like "Star Wars" meets "Star Trek", but turbo-charged

2003-11-18 [teptep]: effs no thanks not into the big star wars startreck thing, there both nice things to watch but I am not a big fan.

2003-11-18 [Nere]: *grins moronically and seperates her two middle fingers in a vulcan gesture* hehe...i grew up with them, especially star trek, me dads a big fan :P...

2003-11-18 [liiga]: The best sci-fi author I know is Arthur C. Clarke. Read alll his books that our uni's library has. ^^ Most enjoyed reading 'Light of Other Days' and 'Childhood's End' (especially the second one). ^.^

2003-11-19 [Paul Doyle]: "Childhood's End" is an enduring classic; short but gripping. Try to avoid Clarke's "2061: odyssey three", though. Really awful

2003-11-19 [teptep]: are you all trying to get me to read more :P....stop it!

2003-11-19 [Paul Doyle]: bwahahahaha

2003-11-19 [Nulltorque]: For a fun romp through an almost believable future gone mad, I highly recommend "Snow Crash". Colorful, innovative, and highly energetic, not to mention humorous in places. :)

2003-11-19 [Sheepy]: Snow Crash is AWESOME POSSUM. I hear his other books are, too, but I haven't gotten round to em, yet. In a similar vein, Gibson's "Neuromancer" is quite delightful, and the father of cyberpunk.

2003-11-19 [Paul Doyle]: "Neuromancer" is one of the all-time most influential SF books . . . never heard of "Snow Crash" though. What's it like?

2003-11-19 [Paul Doyle]: read, [teptep], read! Mwahahaha

2003-11-19 [Sheepy]: It takes place in a sort of post-apocalyptic world (very different from the one we're in, at any rate), and ha s apleasant mixture of action, hacking, politics, and an unusual amount of linguistic stuff to push the plot along.

2003-11-19 [Paul Doyle]: cool! :-)

2003-11-20 [liiga]: Ack I'm Happy I'm finally done w/ my entry. It took too long. x.x

2003-11-20 [Paul Doyle]: OMG, [liiga], did you just make that pic?

2003-11-20 [liiga]: It took me 4 days, I just finished it today. ^^

2003-11-20 [Nere]: WOW!!!! *stunned and impressed silence*

2003-11-20 [liiga]: *blush* Thanks. :)

2003-11-20 [Nere]: if you don't mind me asking...what program/s do you use??

2003-11-20 [Paul Doyle]: *falls over and faints* I'll waive that 100 KB limit . . . it's so good it's overwhelming

2003-11-20 [liiga]: [Paul Doyle], the little entry I posted here is 95Kb. ^-^ [Nere] - basic scenery - Vue d'Esprit 4, everything else - Ulead Photoimpact 8 (w/ mouse... the PAIN...).

2003-11-20 [Nere]: geez...thats cool... :P

2003-11-20 [Paul Doyle]: Seriously, I'm in awe! And, of course, awwww

2003-11-20 [liiga]: *blushes again* look what you did /).(\

2003-11-20 [Paul Doyle]: sorry ::hugs::

2003-11-20 [liiga]: *hugs back* it's okay ^^

2003-11-20 [Kamona]: *JAW DROPS* omg that is so awsome, Iiiga

2003-11-20 [Paul Doyle]: I'm happy we're happy about each other, and not at each others' throats! :-)

2003-11-20 [Nere]: that Vue d'Espirit software is wicked (i downloaded a demo:P)...wish i could afford to buy it.. :P

2003-11-20 [liiga]: *is temporarily awake again* ^^ Well I never buy any programs. What is Kazaa Lite (or WinMX or other such things) for anyways. :P

2003-11-20 [Nere]: ??? don't know...where do you get your software from??

2003-11-20 [liiga]: http://www.k-lite.tk/ There. ^^

2003-11-20 [liiga]: Kazaa Lite. It seems that their homepage is down, but anyways it works so that you can pretty much d/l any software if there's anyone willing to share it - and in most cases someone is. Something Napster-like. I prefer Kazaa Lite over Kazaa and Morpheus 'cause it doesn't rip such huge security holes or install spyware.

2003-11-20 [teptep]: dang liiga your picture just blows mine away wow!

2003-11-20 [Sirfy]: wow, I really don't have a chance now ^^

2003-11-20 [liiga]: Never say never! ^^

2003-11-20 [teptep]: Idon't stand a chance eather. what little chance I had went out the door with liiga's picture.

2003-11-20 [Paul Doyle]: I'm almost scared to enter now . . . ;-)

2003-11-20 [liiga]: I'm starting to develop that in a permanent form, for new contests... o.o

2003-11-21 [Nulltorque]: I'm definately still entering. Don't let the high quality ones scare ya off! This is a celebration of creativity. We can't all be Michelangelos from the word go. That's what practice is for. :)

2003-11-21 [Paul Doyle]: amen to that, [Nulltorque]

2003-11-21 [teptep]: ok I uploaded another picture I asked paul doyle first I think you should to if you want to I am sure there isn't gonna be fifty entries atleast I have never seen that many on the other contests. this one looks more dimarian. it is still in progress. I might take the other one down if this one goes well, reason the secont one I have up fits the species more corectly and the other one was a lazy atempt to join the contest, I am so ashamed. though I still think my entry is kinda lame.

2003-11-21 [Nulltorque]: Bah, ANY entry is a good entry. The fact you get out of bed that day and decide to draw a picture of what is in your head is fantastic im my opinion. Keep the good stuff comin!

2003-11-21 [Pnelma Tirian]: MWAH!!!I ENTERED!! MWAHAHAHAAAA!!!

2003-11-21 [Nulltorque]: I finaly have an entry ready, so there you have it! :) It's a far cry from picture quality of the original, but what can ya do?

2003-11-21 [Pnelma Tirian]: *mumblemuttergrumblestupiddecentartistsgrumblemutter*

2003-11-21 [Pnelma Tirian]: (:

2003-11-21 [Kamona]: O_O *looks at new entrees* ok I lost ^_^

2003-11-21 [liiga]: They're good. ^_^ [Nulltorque], did you try Angelfire? I use it all the time. Free account and remote linking allowed.

2003-11-22 [Paul Doyle]: [liiga] do you ever sleep? O___o

2003-11-22 [Paul Doyle]: [Nulltorque] that is one AWESOME pic!

2003-11-22 [Paul Doyle]: [Pnelma Tirian] I remember that pic . . . she looks---lonely, but expecting company? She's cute

2003-11-22 [Paul Doyle]: [teptep] I, for one, like both your old pic as well as your new one! They are downright huggable.

2003-11-22 [Nulltorque]: Thank you for the tip liiga I'll definitely try the Angelfire route. Thank you guys for the compliments. As far as I know there is no prize other than the recognition of your peers for this contest, so I don't think we have to be too concerned about the whole winning thing. If you guys want, I'll just relinquish my eligibility for getting votes, (not that I think I am going to win) I am just in this for the fun of it!

2003-11-22 [Nulltorque]: There, I messed with the focus a bit on my picture. Hopefully it's a little better now. :)

2003-11-22 [Nere]: yeah..its a lot clearer :)

2003-11-22 [liiga]: [Paul Doyle], I just woke up! :D

2003-11-22 [Sirfy]: But my scanner is bad, and even if I do get a really good drawing (peh, only a scaetch will work good here) then it will look crappy once I scan it, much like all my drawings.

2003-11-22 [Nulltorque]: I hear you. Apperently my "focusing" job, did a fine job of taking out all the middle values as well. ::sigh::

2003-11-22 [Sheepy]: Sirfy: what kind of scanner do you have? have you tried fudging around with the settings, or could you use a better one at school? Here is a page with lots of scanning tips which can help you maximize accuracy: http://www.scantips.com/

2003-11-23 [liiga]: [teptep], that's quite some improvement. looks great :D

2003-11-23 [Paul Doyle]: rock on, [teptep]! I will now temporarily allow people to submit multiple entries, unless demand otherwise dictates one pic per artist. 'Tis my decree, and all that stuff.

2003-11-23 [Paul Doyle]: The rule change is now in the wiki area, typo and all

2003-11-23 [Nere]: wow...teptep thats cool!! :P

2003-11-23 [Nulltorque]: Aye, excellent work Teptep. :)

2003-11-24 [YDT]: how can I ever make something better then the above shown??

2003-11-24 [Sheepy]: Judit: by practicing hard every day :)

2003-11-24 [Nulltorque]: This is not about making something "better", but rather just making a showing. THERE IS NO PRIZE for this contest. I think I am not going to enter these contests anymore until the last minute. Next time a contest like this is run, the pictures should not be shown till all entries are in. You just place your name when you have completed a drawing, and secretly send your piece to the contest runner. At the deadline all pictures are displayed and voting happens. Egos do no belong in art contests, just effort and your best try.

2003-11-24 [liiga]: I dunno if that's a bad idea to be motivated to draw something better...

2003-11-24 [Nulltorque]: It's just a suggestion to try and get those people who think they are not good enough to enter, to enter anyway. I don't want to miss out on thier worthy efforts.

2003-11-25 [Paul Doyle]: Hang on a second . . . I am going to PROVE this is not an intimidating environment . . . by posting what I've done so far . . .

2003-11-25 [Nere]: ??i don't know what your all fussed about?? i only enter cause its a bit of motivation to try something different:P

2003-11-25 [Paul Doyle]: Are you ready for my "post"? Here it comes . . .

2003-11-25 [Nere]: *waits, on the edge of her seat* :P

2003-11-25 [Sheepy]: hmm.. the image won't load over here :/ *edit* I lied, it was just being a poop. I bet that's really a brilliant drawing, and you're just hiding the quality under a teeny tiny scan =)

2003-11-25 [Paul Doyle]: Explanation: my two main dragon characters, Jak'edrac sel'Gury and his mate-for-life Jul'eweisa, are sound asleep on the beach of an alien shore. Cuddled up or sprawled out near them or three Dimarenes . . . the pre-sketch is on the back of a "discontinue direct deposit" form they have in extreme abundance at my workplace :P

2003-11-25 [Nere]: lol....that explains the size :P

2003-11-25 [Paul Doyle]: the two J's are found in a more family-friendly pose than [123scapegoat]  ;-)

2003-11-25 [Nulltorque]: I realy need to put another dragon of my own style in the work, since I think that is what Paul wanted to begin with. I even have a place for him in the work, I just have to get off my lazy duff long enough to put it in there.

2003-11-25 [Nulltorque]: I am finding your latest scan to be difficult to see Paul. I think the blue paper may be having a bad effect on the contrast with the pencil lines.

2003-11-25 [Paul Doyle]: actually the paper is 8 1/2 X 11 . . . it's just a quick sketch I did on Sunday while on break sitting around watching the Patriots win again :D

2003-11-25 [Paul Doyle]: My point is that you don't have to be Michael Whelan to enter this contest. I will NOT be finishing that pic on that awful blue company memo, but on plain old high-quality printer paper! Again, this is to reassure certain people that this contest is not an entry exam to Epilogue, or something of that caliber

2003-11-25 [Nulltorque]: I find pressing down a bit on the scanner lid with your fingers can smooth our some of those fold bumps you seem to be having there.

2003-11-25 [Nulltorque]: Well, disregard what I just said then. :) Since it seems you will be doing another for your final entry anyway.

2003-11-25 [Paul Doyle]: yep, I pulled the thing straight out of the back of my pocket after work on Sunday, [Nulltorque]

2003-11-25 [teptep]: ok I am gonna say something that everyone should listen to, yes there is some very very talented artists here, yes some don't compare to these artists, like me, however talent isn't what comes from the hand, it is what comes from the heart mind and soul, my art can be said to be ok but it is nothing special, however I have only been practicing for 4 and a half years and is just now getting into editing with color, detail yet aludes me, however you have to relize that these people too had to practice and practice alot to get that good, I can't state enough that they to whern't that good once and probably admired other peoples art. so don't feel bad, one day you may be in there shoes.

2003-11-25 [Nere]: hehe...changed mine a bit...:P

2003-11-25 [liiga]: Amen, [teptep]. ^^

2003-11-25 [Paul Doyle]: nice, [Nere] . .. now will people NOT get intimidated by this contest?!?!?!? Seriously . .. I hope my Blue Decoy does its job and gets more people to enter this contest! (I'll replace the Blue Decoy soon with something a tiny bit better)

2003-11-26 [Paul Doyle]: [Kamona] your draggie has eyes like Draco from "Dragonheart" . . . wise, quietly powerful, and perceiving

2003-11-26 [Kamona]: Mmm realy? *ponders on it* never looked at it that way. Thanks ^_^. Hey [Nere] ! I love the addition in your pic! Lol!! very cute!

2003-11-30 [Paul Doyle]: Nice work in progress, [Sheepy] . . . you are WAY ahead of me! Sorry, everybody, but it's probably going to be ANOTHER week before I get my pic done. I posted on the Elfwood Rant Live Journal and got a firestorm of criticism and commentary, and that's the main reason why that blue decoy is still a blue decoy! But don't worry, I will get it done . . .

2003-12-02 [Paul Doyle]: [TamponLollipops] so nice to see your entry! I love your style . . . I admit that I've never seen a draggie with hot pink hair, so cool!

2003-12-04 [Paul Doyle]: I have to finish my frog contest entry . . . a samurai frog . . . and then I am getting on the pic here!

2003-12-08 [teptep]: blaargggleaaaaaaa *shakes head and runs around screaming!* blargle baaabeerrraaa!...um yeah!

2003-12-08 [Paul Doyle]: Don't worry . . . it's coming along. If you're still on in 20 minutes you'll see what I've done so far . . .

2003-12-08 [Paul Doyle]: I've also decided not to give this page a "password" until the deadline has come (TBA . . . probably around Super Bowl Sunday, or thereabouts)

2003-12-08 [teptep]: um ok?

2003-12-08 [Paul Doyle]: here it comes . . . (no blue decoy this time, but it's VERY much "in progress . . ."

2003-12-08 [Paul Doyle]: happy now, [teptep]? @___@

2003-12-09 [teptep]: heh

2003-12-10 [Paul Doyle]: I got harassed by some ass-kisser at work today, but I started adding the five dragons in the middle

2003-12-10 [liiga]: Great! And now you know where to get food for your dragons, too! ^^

2003-12-10 [Paul Doyle]: One paticular caveat (in this case): My "Doyle Dragons" CANNOT eat humans, no matter how hard they try. Humans have toxins that make my dragons very sick. (Although humans find the flesh of Doyle Dragons rather tasty, far beyond the taste of chicken). And something tells me that Dee's dragons just simply wouldn't eat humans, unless it was the end of the world or something. But thanks for the idea! ;-)

2003-12-11 [Bad_Badtz]: Oh man, mine looks WAAAAY better on paper. Huh, oh well, I guess you'll all have to endure it. ^__^

2003-12-11 [Paul Doyle]: This is a beautiful entry, [Bad_Badtz] I really, REALLY like it. Thank you for entering! (Reminds self to get his entry done TODAY)

2003-12-11 [Bad_Badtz]: Thanks!^__^

2003-12-12 [Bad_Badtz]: Yeah, it's just kinda confusing looking on the computer. Unless your me ofcourse. ^__^

2003-12-12 [Bad_Badtz]: Its kinda blurry too, huh, I wonder how that happend....

2003-12-12 [liiga]: Mybe 'cause of downsizing? I suspect the scan was bigger than this. When downsizing big pics a whole lot I usually apply the sharpen filter first, so that the detail stands out better.

2003-12-14 [Bad_Badtz]: I think mines too Asian.

2003-12-14 [Pnelma Tirian]: nah. it just looks less....dragon, than more like, uh, cattish or doggish...feral, that's it..

2003-12-15 [Paul Doyle]: Just as long as it doesn't look like "Falkor" from "The Never Ending Story", it's fine with me. :-) There's PLENTY of time left; as a matter of fact, I need you all to help me find reasonable contest closing date. I was thinking February 1 2004, but I need input. My picture progresses rather nicely now, as I have finished and posted my frog contest entry

2003-12-15 [liiga]: Feb 1 sounds okay? But maybe we could all spread the word of the contest a bit more. Not too many entries. The more the merrier, you know?

2003-12-15 [Paul Doyle]: Yes! We do need more entries! I'll advertise some more . . . I've advertised on art contests several times

2003-12-15 [liiga]: Hmm I'm perfectly sure there were some other contest lists, too. I'll see if I can find them. ^_^

2003-12-15 [liiga]: Ok, found one: contest corner

2003-12-15 [Paul Doyle]: I'm there, duuude . . .

2003-12-16 [Paul Doyle]: by the way, frog contest could use a few more entries . . . go there, if you might!

2003-12-20 [Paul Doyle]: I apologize for my recent delays . . . extremely busy. In the meantime, here are two "in-progress" scans. The close-up is on a Loth start-up ticket that I'm HOPING will get accepted this, the third time!

2003-12-21 [Fire fae]: Doing my entery at the moment... Hope I'll make it even if it's just in B&W.

2003-12-21 [Sister Earth]: What kind of art program does everyone use here? Does anyones run on Windows 98? (I was looking for a painter program.)

2003-12-21 [liiga]: Ulead Photoimpact here - versions up to 6th run even on Win95, versions 7 and 8 - on all other Windows.

2003-12-22 [Paul Doyle]: I just downloaded GIMP from the VCL, where they're being so damn picky about my three pics submitted for assessment! Grrr

2003-12-22 [Paul Doyle]: GIMP does not look user friendly at all  :-(

2003-12-22 [Pnelma Tirian]: well, at least it's more advanced that paint...I like it...

2003-12-22 [Paul Doyle]: Don't knock MS Paint . . . look what you can do with MS Paint, if you're bored:

<img:http://elftown.lysator.liu.se/img/drawing/27794_1071988221.jpg>

2003-12-22 [Sister Earth]: Hehehe..... Ya other people told me to download GIMP.

2003-12-22 [Pnelma Tirian]: Yeah, well, I know, but there's a whole lotta stuff you can;t do in paint.

2003-12-23 [Paul Doyle]: Ch'Marr (the VCL administrator) kind of made me download GIMP---I have to make my graphite drawings have totally white backgrounds. That's fine, but they look weird and unnatural that way! Oh well. Can't wait to get that starter pen and ink set under the Christmas tree . . .  :-O

2003-12-23 [Pnelma Tirian]: lol!

2003-12-23 [Nere]: i got a ton of paint progs....illustrator, photostudio, paint and i just got photoshop........i haven't really spent any time using illustrator though :P

2003-12-23 [Paul Doyle]: GIMP (the version I downloaded from VCL, anyway) looks like a bunch of good things without an obvious central function tying them all together. Very much trial and error!

2003-12-23 [Pnelma Tirian]: hey, now, that's the only program i've got(besides paint, of course) and I like it....I used to have corel but I have no idea how to use it...

2003-12-23 [Nere]: yeah...thats usually how i go about learning to use a paint prog....but its not working too well with illustrator...i think i might have to read the help menu :P

2003-12-23 [Pnelma Tirian]: lol! A program where you can't just use it and learn what the heck that button does is not really a good program...well, for me, at least.

2003-12-23 [Nere]: yeah....its ticking me off a little.....that'll teach me :P

2003-12-23 [Pnelma Tirian]: lol....

2003-12-23 [Paul Doyle]: Arrrgh! My GIMP is all screwed up . . . I can't load any of the pics I'm cleaning up for VCL (the samurai frog, and the two pics on [123scapegoat]. So since it was all messed up, I trashed the entire GIMP copy I had, and now I'm re-downloading the whole thing! Arrrgh. So much wasted time

2003-12-23 [Pnelma Tirian]: interesting.....doesn't do that for me. I guess it likes me more than it likes you.

2003-12-23 [Paul Doyle]: It just finished downloading again, so things should be cool now *knocks on wood*

2003-12-23 [Pnelma Tirian]: yay

2003-12-24 [Sheepy]: http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Software/Graphics/Image_Editing/The_GIMP/FAQs,_Help_and_Tutorials/?tc=1 is a nice list of GIMP tutorials. Most all good graphics programs take a while to learn if you've never used one before. Salek: if you ever decide to try Corel again, let me know and I'd be happy to answer any questions :) *hugs her Corel Graphics Suite v11*

2003-12-24 [Sirfy]: I still want to do an entry o.0

2003-12-24 [Paul Doyle]: Go right ahead, [Sirfy]! Not enough entries up yet to set a deadline

2003-12-24 [Paul Doyle]: Happy Holidays, everybody  :-)

2003-12-24 [liiga]: *chimes in* o/* We wish you a merry X-mas, we wish you a merry X-mas, we wish you a merry X-mas and a Happy new Year! o/* ^.^

2003-12-31 [Paul Doyle]: Hey everybody! I'm back . . . My Loth page got posted and I got flamed big time because I'm very much an "amateur". I had a lot of fun responding to the comments, though. My work in progress (the close-up) is on Loth, and now I've got the incentive to finish the pic soon! Don't go crazy on the alcohol come New Year's, OK? Get a designated driver if you open a second, or third, champagne bottle. Seriously.

2003-12-31 [Nere]: yes mum  ...  -.-"

2003-12-31 [Paul Doyle]: Well, OK, that WAS the parent in me speaking. I know some people, including my own brother, who are in AA. My brother's been clean since 1993, thankfully. :-) I have to make sure I don't get silly, either. On Christmas I had two big glasses of red red wine, a sample of a blend of white wine that was something like a superior tasting wine cooler, but with all the alcohol of full wine, and a shot of creme de menthe around midnight Christmas. I know that sounds silly, but I normally drink maybe one beer a month. It was fun, but I don't want to go down a dangerous path to alcoholism. This is why I fret, boys and girls, because I've seen the face of alcoholism and it isn't pretty.

2003-12-31 [Paul Doyle]: "Whoopie-do", you might say, cracking open a fifth beer in two hours. If I sound paranoid or like Chicken Licken, then y'all know where I'm coming from. It just strikes a nerve with me. People careening around crashing---I work at a casino, so it's not like I've never seen intoxication before! OK, sorry to spoil the holiday mood---thy rant 'tis over. *walks off the pulpit* *trips on something* *falls on his ass*

2003-12-31 [Nere]: lol...yeah...I see where your coming from...all things in moderation!

2003-12-31 [Paul Doyle]: Yesttth (guzzling down a pint of Johnny Walker straight from the bottle)

2003-12-31 [Paul Doyle]: J/K  O___*

2003-12-31 [Nere]: :Y...Mufghumbleumgh? .*swallows* eh, Jonny Walker?...More of a Vodka drinker myself...and Coronas ... :P

2003-12-31 [Sheepy]: CORONA? Eaugh! *drags Nere to a brewpub for some real beer*

2003-12-31 [liiga]: %(#*&$*%&@^#*&%^$* alcohol. *cough* okay, I'm done here.

2003-12-31 [Paul Doyle]: It was meant as a joke . . . but I was serious about the AA and the safety issues. Sorry we offended you, [liiga]

2003-12-31 [liiga]: naw you didn't offend me. ^^ just expressing my opinion

2003-12-31 [Paul Doyle]: When the holiday is over, I'd definitely like to get the ball rolling here again. I've advertised this contest a lot, and it seems to be falling well short of the participation level I expected. So there'll be a deadline posted very soon.

2004-01-01 [Nere]: *Wonders if this pub sells irish beer....or maybe some Aussie brew...* dude, you better not try to give me a VB....ick! :P

2004-01-01 [Paul Doyle]: [Fire fae] The left dragon is based on that Todd Hamilton (think that's his name . . . ) "new" DragonLance illustration, right? I miss the old Elmore covers . . .

2004-01-01 [Sheepy]: Nere: some sort of stout is almost always offered at a brewpub, though it's occasionally imperial instead of Irish(irish stout would be similar to guiness). What about a nice Scotch Ale? yum. But if you like Coronos you'd probably like blondes and pilsners better. What's a VB? o_O

2004-01-01 [Fire fae]: yep.. I saw that pic, liked the pose, got same paper and pencil and started to draw... hope it's ok.

2004-01-01 [Paul Doyle]: Corona does't have enough character---Dos Equis, Modesto Negro, now we're talkin'

2004-01-01 [Paul Doyle]: [Fire fae] that's OK . . . nothing wrong with that. Now we just need more people to enter!

2004-01-01 [Sheepy]: Modesto Negro is pretty good -- but I still prefer microbrews. I won't go near any yellow beers unless my tongue has been previously numbed with hops, so Corona is right out. Thanks to [Viking] for turning me into such a beer snob *g*

2004-01-01 [Paul Doyle]: *gasp* It's the Chokolat Dragon! Where's [boogie]!

2004-01-02 [Nere]: VB...Victorian Bitter is an english brew i believe...an downright yuck.....and I don't mind Coronas, but I love Crown Larger....good 'ol Carlton breweries!!

2004-01-02 [Nere]: erm...are we allowed two entries?....cause [TamponLollipops] has two...and yeah..I just thought I should point that out....

2004-01-02 [liiga]: Quoting the rules: "DON'T LOOK NOW FOLKS, BUT HERE COMES YET ANOTHER RULE CHANGE! November 22, 2003--- Until we get a LOT more artists submitting entries, go ahead and put up multiple entries. If this contest catches on in a major way, all entrants will choose which entry to keep back, and we will revert back to th original rule." ^-^ Never ever listen when they tell you to not look. ;)

2004-01-02 [Nere]: oh...sorry...didn't see that..haven't been reading the rules since i finished my entry....takes it all back i does....'cept that bit about the VB and Crown larger...I ment that :P

2004-01-02 [Sheepy]: *l* I'm not a big hops fan, so I would never subject anyone to VB or ESB or any thing like that =)

2004-01-03 [Paul Doyle]: Has anybody ever had home-brewed root beer? Non-alcoholic, and it's to die for

2004-01-03 [Sheepy]: well, not home brewed, but microbrewed. The two brewpubs I go to (one in MA, one in PA at school) make their own root beer, which is deeelicious. I wish they let you take growlers of it home.

2004-01-03 [Paul Doyle]: mmmmm! There's a place in Newport, RI that's like that (well, it's actually in Middletown, RI I think) It's a cool pub and a microbrewery, and sure enough they brew their own root beer! Awesome.

2004-01-03 [Nere]: well....as i'm not a beer connoisseur... I'll just settle for for what I know... :P

2004-01-03 [Paul Doyle]: You seem to write and do artwork very well, [Nere] . . . thanks for reading and commenting on my Santa story, btw

2004-01-03 [Paul Doyle]: Are there any objections to having 1 February 2004 the contest deadline? I'll act on feedback, or reasonable suggestions. The ballot box is open . . . no CHADS need apply

2004-01-03 [Nere]: :P Thanks....and I enjoyed the story.....No objections to the deadline here....

2004-01-03 [Sheepy]: hey, that would even give me time to do a second once I get back to school.. nice! :)

2004-01-03 [Paul Doyle]: cool! I've a second one in mind, too . . . I'm going to export this page and tell some people who aren't on Elftown about this contest, too, OK?

2004-01-03 [Sheepy]: How dare you! ;)

2004-01-03 [liiga]: Yay for exporting! ^^ And no objections against deadline here either.

2004-01-04 [Sirfy]: Since school is starting, I'll hvae time at night for my drawings, instead of sitting here. I hvae a pic in mind and should be done by then! I'm not coloring though.

2004-01-04 [Paul Doyle]: What does it mean, "exporting" (other than the RL economic status of trading goods to another nation)
